Mianzi means face - saving face, earning face, keeping face, gaining face; face is a measure of integrity, status, personality.

Without mianzi chances of success in business or in public office are minimal. Chinese attributes of zhong yong (see China), guan xi (see Singapore), are, like mianzi, universal to Chinese communities anywhere.
